Home remedies for cough and cold

 


There are different natural remedies use to treat a persistent cough. The following are some of the natural remedies that can be used to treat a persistent cough;

1.    The use of honey tea: A study has shown that honey can relieve coughs. Research has shown that honey provide the most significant relief from coughing, followed by dextromethorphan. If you want to use honey to treat cough you can mix two teaspoons with warm water or an herbal tea. Make sure you drink the mixture once or twice a day. Honey should not be given to children that are under 1 year of age.

2.    Taking ginger tea: Ginger actually has anti-inflammatory properties that can ease a dry or asthmatic cough. Taking ginger tea can also relieve nausea and pain. According to research the anti-inflammatory compounds in ginger can relax membranes in the airways, which could actually reduce coughing. You can brew up a soothing ginger tea by adding twenty to forty grams of fresh ginger slices to a cup of hot water, and then you need to allow it to steep for a few minutes before drinking it. You can add lemon or honey to improve the taste.

3.    Drinking fluids: If you have cough or cold, staying hydrated is very important. According to research drinking liquids at a room temperature can help alleviate a cough, sneezing and runny nose. Taking warm beverages may also benefits people with symptoms of cold or flu. A study has also shown that hot beverages help to alleviate even more symptoms of cold or flu, which include sore throat, chills, and fatigue. Some of the hot beverages you can take include; herbal teas, clear broths, warm fruit juices, decaffeinated black tea, and warm water.

4.    Taking salt water: Taking salt water is one of the simplest remedy and most effective methods for treating a sore throat and wet cough. Actually salt water helps to reduces phlegm and mucus in the back of the throat which can in turn lessen the need to cough. To apply this method you can stir half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water until it dissolves. Make sure you allow the solution to cool slightly before using it to gargle. Make sure you let the mixture to sit at the back of your throat for a few moments before spitting it out. Salt water should not be given to children as they may not be able to gargle properly and swallowing salt water can be dangerous to their health.

5.    Using Thyme: Thyme is commonly used as a remedy for cough, bronchitis, sore throat, and digestive issues. Most of this cough syrup in the market today consists of thyme and ivy leaves. If you actually want to treat cough using thyme you can look for a cough syrup that contains thyme. Thyme is actually an herb that has both culinary and medicinal uses. You can make thyme tea by adding two teaspoon of dried thyme to a cup of hot water, and then allow it steep for about 10 minutes before straining and drinking.
